Design Centre Stories

Matter of Taste

Easy on the eye and pleasant to the touch, a matt white finish has a softness that feels just right for a troubled world. Several new launches at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour are exploring this theme, from sculptural chalky lighting to silky-smooth baths and basins. Matt white finishes whisper rather than shout, but they can be amped up by playing around with different ends of the spectrum when it comes to reflectivity. with the addition of contrasting gleaming metallics or high-shine lacquer.

Vaughan’s Chalk White collection (above) has been in the making a long time, according to Lucy Vaughan: “In some way, it began at the same time as my career did – back when I was working in ceramic restoration at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Since then, I have had a love of creamware and off-white pieces – from 18th-century porcelain through to Giacometti’s painted plaster finishes.” The collection’s six products include the ‘Sherwood’ lantern and ‘Carrick Leaf’ wall light (both pictured above).

Victoria + Albert Baths has launched a 100% matt finish, which it says delivers a “serene, calming and spa-like sensation”. It’s available across its most popular models, including the ‘Ventralla’ bath (above).

Danish brand Fabula Living has combined two soft materials, linen and wool, to create the ‘Felicia’ rug; this hand-woven piece has a subtle herringbone pattern created by the darker linen warp against the wool weft. It’s available from Interdesign.

At Lelièvre Paris, white and off-white sheepskin and wool terry create a comforting cocoon that goes perfectly with fuller-figured furniture. Pictured above left is the aptly named ‘Kosi’.

Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour remains in support of all its showrooms, despite their closure during this time. Until restrictions are lifted, please contact each showroom directly for more information, or ask for help from the Design Centre’s Personal Shopping or Designer Sourcing Service.
