Exploring the Fifth Wall

Don’t forget to look up as you tour the WOW!house – designers have lavished detail on the so-called ‘fifth wall’ and decorated the ceiling with stylish alternatives to a plain painted finish.

Linda Boronkay’s rumpled, reflective silver surface amps up the opulence in her Egyptian-themed Pierre Frey Salon (above left) while Freddy van Zevenbergen of Lambart & Browne worked with Fromental to create a bespoke paper (above right) that was inspired by a brooch by legendary US designer Tony Duquette.

Fabric coverings are also a recurring theme: Schumacher’s ‘Luca Satin’ lines the ceiling in Campbell-Rey’s Garden Room, while next door, Kit and Minnie Kemp have opted for the trellis-like ‘Trevi’ by Gaston y Daniela (above right); and in Joanna Plant’s Tissus d’Hélène bedroom (above left), the handsome tented ceiling is in Namay Samay’s ‘Kadva’.

Paolo Moschino Ltd's WOW!house Drawing Room

Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen have added a looping painted motif around the perimeter of the ceiling in their Drawing Room – the ultimate in artless, understated chic that is an homage to Jean Cocteau, whose print hangs on the wall.
