Regency Revival
A double-fronted Marylebone terrace with park views, designed by the great Recency architect John Nash, sounds like the perfect raw material for an interior designer to work with – however, on the inside, this building was sadly lacking in period detail when design practice Albion Nord was called upon to bring it back to life.
“The property was previously occupied as a commercial space and then stripped back to a raw open concrete shell, so the only original feature was the facade,” says Albion Nord’s creative director Camilla Clark. “Our aim was to sensitively reinstate the Georgian architectural features and proportions of the property while making the most of the spectacular viewpoints and windows out on to the park.”
Clark describes this family home as having “a timeless aesthetic that mixes the old and the new with a classical backdrop and a light, fresh palette. The house is then layered with unique, eclectic pieces and stand-out contemporary British artworks that focus on highlighting the magnificent proportions and architectural features.” Architectural highlights include that must-have for any grand Georgian home, a sweeping stone staircase in the entrance hall, and Albion Nord has also made sure that doors and windows align to make the most of viewpoints and vistas, both internally and out towards the park beyond.
The “envelope” of this house may be rooted in history, but the interiors are far more diverse, with contemporary British artwork (from leading gallery Osborne Samuel) at every turn, working harmoniously with the other elements. An inviting kitchen-diner (above right) features a rug by Tim Page Carpets, while Samuel & Sons trim has been used on the bed canopies in the children’s bedroom (below). The living area (pictured top) includes Fox Linton fabric panelled walls, curtain fabrics from Holland & Sherry and a Kvadrat fabric used on the sofa.
Clark says about the showrooms at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour: “As some of our projects are so fast paced, they are completely invaluable to us in terms of efficiency and reliability, making sure we find the right fabric, on time and on budget.” She singles out Vaughan as “one of our most valued suppliers, for beautiful lighting that works in both traditional and contemporary settings. We have used them throughout the project and they have been our saviour over the years.”
