Journey into Craftsmanship
Suffolk-based weaver Gainsborough may be best-known to visitors to Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour for its fabrics for interiors, available at Collier Webb, but it also works on prestigious projects for the fashion, automotive, aviation and yacht industries. One such project celebrates the ultimate in luxury driving experiences – a new concept car for Bentley, developed to celebrate its centenary.
The design the EXP 100 GT model creates a vision of what a luxury touring car might look like in 2035, yet alongside its sustainability credentials its futuristic outlook is firmly rooted in craftsmanship. Gainsborough worked with Bentley’s colour and trims team to create the cotton damask for the door linings, floor and bulkhead of the car. The hand-woven fabric features a gradation of colour using a bespoke palette specified by Bentley, and a pattern designed to be organic-looking, to chime in with the other natural elements used in the interior, including reclaimed wood and carpet that uses wool from rare-breed sheep.
Gainsborough has an even more long-standing heritage that Bentley: founded in 1903 in Sudbury, it still makes its exceptional fabrics there today.
