Artistic Experience

Dominic Harris Flutter

Contemporary art is increasingly becoming experiential, where you, the viewer, has a say in how a piece appears. Two artworks by Dominic Harris at FOCUS/15 illustrate this perfectly. ‘Flutter’ (pictured, outside the Design Club on the third floor), captures a butterfly on the wing in sequence. As the viewer moves along the piece, the butterflies respond in various ways, with movement that feels as ephemeral as a butterfly itself. ‘Conductor’ (ground floor, centre dome), takes the idea a stage further with the addition of sound – a soundtrack responds to the movement of the individual’s hands and creates a dramatic, all-encompassing interaction with the artwork.

Both pieces have been lent by Mayfair gallery PHOS ART + DESIGN.
