A Showstopper from the Archives

Austrian artist and designer Koloman Moser was one of the influences driving early-20th-century Vienna towards modernity. As co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte, he worked on everything from ceramics and glass to furniture and silverware, but it is his textiles in particular that possess a graphic clarity that is still highly appealing today. Backhausen – the original producer of Moser’s textiles – marked the centenary of his death with a reissue of some designs, such as ‘Schneebeere’ (pictured), meaning ‘snowberry’. This successful revival, available from Colony, was honoured with The World of Interiors Showstopper award at London Design Week 2019 – pictured below is Colony’s Luiza Marra picking up the award from The World of Interiors‘ editor Rupert Thomas. Moser was also the subject of Colony’s ‘Legends’ showcase at the show, which incorporated fashion designer Arthur Arbesser’s interpretation of the artist’s work.

Four further designs won Highly Commended awards: ‘Natsuki’ fabric by Prelle, from Alton-Brooke, Samuel & Sons’ Amalfi trimmings; Arteriors’ collaboration with US designer Celerie Kemble; and interior designer Alidad’s rugs for Tim Page Carpets.
