The Art of Subtraction

The ethereal brushstrokes of Rubelli Venezia’s ‘Mrs Robinson’ cotton velvet are the result of a complex printing method, typical of the Italian textile company’s innovative approach. It’s made using discharge printing: instead of the printing process adding the colour, the pigment is selectively bleached out, a technique that requires significant skill and control. The result is highly expressive, reminiscent of early cyanotype photography, with the delicacy of the floral motif contrasting with its bold scale.
