A Burst of Bloomsbury

Interior designer Gavin Houghton has created a Bloomsbury-inspired interior for Turnell & Gigon at Home. As Turnell & Gigon describes it, “if you’re looking for ‘international beige on beige’, look away”: the space combines colour, pattern and decorative flourishes in joyful combination. Jean Monro’s ‘Rose and Fern’ cotton chintz lines the walls – there are 91 square metres of fabric here, all printed painstakingly by hand, with each 70cm repeat requiring 85 applications of hand-blocks to make it. Further prints and plains are layered up, inspired by the liberal decorating ethos of the Bloomsbury set’s country hideaway, Charleston: sofas are upholstered in a slubby linen blend and sumptuous mohair velvet, both by Edmond Petit, with silk damask cushions by Veraseta and floral cushions and lampshades by Charles Burger. A painting and drawing by Bloomsbury artist Duncan Grant are among the artworks, with a pair of late-18th-century shell consoles making the room even more sumptuous.
