Plain, printed or cut, velvet’s tactile nature makes it perfect for upholstery, where its soft surface can be enjoyed by both the eye and the hand. This season’s velvets are particularly moody and opulent, in dark jewel tones or with printed florals emerging from dark grounds. Zoffany’s ‘Aldwych’ fabric (pictured, top), from a new collection of the same name, is subtly textured. GP & J Baker’s collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces includes ‘Queen’s Garden Velvet’ and ‘Royal Garden Velvet’, both painterly florals, as well as enticing plains (pictured, centre). C&C Milano had also added two velvets,‘Fenice’ and ‘Chimera’ to its range, suitable for high-performance upholstery. See strokeable furniture upholstered in velvet at Poliform and Chaplins (whose ‘Essential’ sofa by Edra is pictured bottom).
