AB FAB JOANNA LUMLEY SWITCHES ON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Warmly welcomed by a crowd of top designers and high-profile design lovers, the absolutely fabulous Joanna Lumley actress, presenter and writer switched on the Christmas lights at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. With her characteristic warmth and sense of fun she brought seasonal good cheer to the evening by illuminating the glass domes in the world’s premier design centre.

“It’s thrilling to be here,’ she said. ‘To see so many lovely lights in one exciting space is absolutely gasp-making.”

Imaginatively conceived and beautifully realised, the installations are some of the most striking to date; a visual experience that is spectacular, while retaining a sense of wonder and enchantment. Overhead a magnificent 6 metre Christmas tree suspended from the ceiling and surrounded by thousands of twinkling lights, baubles and silver snowflakes, each as delicate and spellbinding as the next, cascaded through the centre dome. Mistletoe stilt walkers and santa girls mingled amongst the crowd, while trumpeters announcing Joanna’s arrival added to the sense of occasion. Guests enjoyed mulled wine, cocktails, roasted chestnuts and festive canapés as well as live performances from carol singers, The London Community Gospel Choir, and the Beatbox Collective. Now in its ninth year, the event is a much-anticipated annual tradition bringing together top designers and high-profile design lovers.

THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE

Imaginatively conceived and beautifully realised, the installations were some of the most striking to date; a visual experience that is spectacular, while retaining a sense of wonder and enchantment. A giant gingerbread house, over five metres high, complete with sugar windows, royal icing and cookie walls looked good enough to eat. Its traditional confection and inviting glow from the interior bringing the enticing creation to life. Visitors were invited to walk inside to glimpse furniture, lighting and rugs designed by some of the magic-makers in the showrooms. Click here to download the credits
