From Here to Eternity

Wendy Morrison often draws on the motifs of East Asia for her work, and her latest Eternal Toile collection takes inspiration from the ten symbols of a long life familiar to traditional Korean art.

Across a stunning hand-knotted wool and silk rug, a hand-embroidered wall-hanging, a wallpaper, a viscose and linen fabric and a crewel embroidery cushion, Eternal Toile is Wendy Morrison’s take on this ancient artistic tradition, with six of the ten symbols incorporated into her design: mountains, clouds, water, pine trees, the crane and the deer. The palette is sophisticated and opulent, in cream, gold and black with flashes of lilac.

Eternal Toile is one of my favourite designs,” says Morrison. “Not only is she gentle and calm, her story is one that represents a long and happy life. Mountain details in gold silk create richness and a sense of grounding, while beautiful lilac cranes add a sense of calm.”

The pieces are also a celebration of craftsmanship: the wool and silk rug is traditionally hand-knotted, while the cushions and wall-hanging show off the delicate detail of crewelwork embroidery.

See the collection in the showroom, where on Tuesday 19 September during Focus/23, Wendy Morrison and interior designer Clare Gaskin will talk to journalist Busola Evans about Eternal Toile, and the joy of lifting neutrals with colour, as part of the show’s free Access All Areas events programme.
