Portrait of a Room
Jeremiah Goodman is almost a cult figure among designers, an artist and illustrator who captures residential interiors in a loose, atmospheric style that is instantly recognisable. A selection of these interior ‘portraits’ – which often depict the homes of well-known figures from the worlds of design and fashion – is on show during Focus/16. Goodman achieved success as an advertising illustrator, contributing to publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Interior Design Magazine, before a 1948 meeting with Sir John Gielgud introduced him to the people (and their grand houses) of British high society. He then began to take painting more seriously, and over the years has captured rooms belonging to the likes of Cecil Beaton, Carolina Herrera, Diana Vreeland and David Hicks – all of which appear in this special exhibition.
