New Viewpoints for Velvet

Soft, tactile and colourful, velvet has ascended to the top of the textile trend list – perhaps because in our 24/7 frantic world, we are craving an inviting and nurturing retreat. Combine with high sides and rounded edges in furniture and soft carpets underfoot to create a cocoon of cosiness.

Brands are responding to the demand for velvet by coming up with new styles and patterns that are a fresh take on this classic, opulent fabric. A chunky channelled appearance – like an oversized corduroy – is the hallmark of Nobilis’ ‘Velours Bigg’, for example (pictured top), tapping in to the vogue for glamorous 70s-inspired interiors. There’s a similar aesthetic to Arte’s ‘Twirl’ wallcovering (pictured centre), part of its new Velveteen collection of three-dimensional flocked finishes.

GP & J Baker is reinterpreting favourites from its existing portfolio in velvet: the Signature Velvet Prints collection (pictured bottom) includes the watery ‘Nympheus’ (on stool) shown here with ‘Petropolis’ (on cushion), inspired by an antique oriental carpet.
