Softer Than Cashmere

Living at high altitude in the Peruvian Andes, alpaca survive the harsh climate thanks to their remarkable fleece. Textiles made from these super-soft fibres are prized for their warmth – and they are now available at George Spencer Designs, since the showroom added French textile company Innata to its stable of brands.

Innata specialises in alpaca fabrics, and aims to preserve the heritage of alpaca farming by combining traditional weaving techniques with modern, innovative finishes. Sustainable and fairly traded, its textiles come in seven collections alongside a selection of rugs, cushions and throws.

Both made from 100% baby alpaca, ‘Fishbone’ (above left) features a herringbone design while ‘Essentiel’ (above right) comes in 10 colours that are either natural and undyed, or coloured using dyes certified by Oeko-Tex, the standard for chemical-free manufacturing processes. For anyone interested in bringing healthier products into their interior, the fabrics’ Oeko-Tex certification, along with the fact that alpaca is also hypoallergenic material, are two compelling reasons to look closer at this wonder-fabric.
