Design Centre Stories

Haute Heritage

Stuff upper lip at the ready: country-house decorating is back, from relaxed tweeds to trimmings that take their cues from historical originals. Several new collections have mined the archives to reinvent the decor of the past for the 21st-century, making that grand-yet-inviting, multi-layered traditional style easier to attain. Sanderson’s Darnley range (available from Style Library) is an homage to rich and decadent interiors; the image (top) shows ‘Heiress Damask’ curtains and ‘Rose Absolute’ upholstering the sofa. Timothy Corrigan’s Chevallerie collection of passementerie for Samuel & Sons was inspired by the designer’s own 18th-century Château de La Chevallerie in the Loire Valley, and includes a tactile brushed fringe and appliqué borders; pictured (centre) is the ‘Scalloped Tassel Fringe’. ‘Métissage’ by Casamance (available from Colony) blends yarns of different widths and textures to create a tweed-like fabric that contributes to a textured, multi-layered look. All that’s missing is a corgi curled up on the sofa.
