Johnstons of Elgin Taps its Archive for a New Classic
Johnstons of Elgin created its first tweed in 1846: it currently holds a Royal Warrant for Scottish Estate Tweed and these fabrics remain an essential part of its business. However, tweed is not just useful as a warm, comfortable and weather-resistant textile for apparel: the company has launched an interiors range of wool tweeds that show it is just as timeless and versatile for the home.
The Wool Tweeds collection offers a contemporary take on patterns from the archive, which all have their story to tell. ‘Gun Club’ is based on a classic gun club check, which originated on the Coigach Estate in 1874, while ‘Hairline’ is a fine check often seen on traditional Scottish estate tweeds. A classic herringbone and houndstooth complete the collection. Their roots may be traditional, but these fabrics look equally good upholstering a contemporary chair as a classic sofa.
Complementing the tweed collection is a range of plain wool felts, in a colour palette inspired by nature, from soft neutrals such as frost, a pale grey, to rowan, a bright red. Tightly woven for durability and with a beautiful drape, they are suitable for both upholstery and drapery.
