Design Centre Stories

Colour Fields

Since its founding in 2013, Brooklyn-based Calico Wallpaper has become known for its large-scale, art-led approach to wallcoverings: now, founders Rachel and Nicholas Cope have worked with Knoll Textiles on a series of three new products, bringing their boldly scaled designs to a wider contract market.

The Fields collection’s starting point is a series of watercolours and ink drawings, which have been enlarged and digitally printed to retain all the delicate detail and complex colours of the originals. They all have a grid-like structure, but each design has varying degrees of looseness or formality: ‘Expanse’ (pictured top) is formed of  regularly spaced oblongs; the striped ‘Ascent’ (pictured above) is based on an original print made with stamping blocks; and ‘Traverse’ (pictured below) is almost tartan-like with its combination of narrow and wide lines.

The wallcoverings are available at StudioTex, alongside a number of other imaginative new launches from Knoll Textiles, including Clever, a textile collection inspired by the balance and beauty of spider’s webs, and the Destination collection of high-performance fabrics that work inside and out.
