Zoe Glencross collaborates with Ca’ Pietra Artisans on a tile collection inspired by Spain and Portugal
Zoe Glencross’ Aventuras collection of fabrics was inspired by trips to Spain and Portugal, and in particular the intricate patterns of Moorish Mudéjar style and Portuguese glazed ceramic azulejos tiles. Her points of reference have now come full circle with the release of the Aventuras tile collection, a collaboration with Ca’ Pietra Artisans (the Design Centre East showroom that recently changed its name from Artisans of Devizes).
There four designs and three colours (terracotta, olive green, and denim blue), including ‘Palma’ (above centre), a take on the magnificent rose window in Palma cathedral; and ‘Malla’ (above left) with its trompe l’oeil woven design. Glencross’ designs started life as linocuts, so the finished tiles (like ‘Porto’, above right) have the charming hand-printed feel of the original fabrics rather than slavishly copying the Moorish and Portuguese tiles that inspired them.
The collection has been designed so that you can build your own patterned walls or floors. Tiles can be used on their own or in combination with complementary field tiles in eight colours, in the same palette of earthy reds, greens, blues and soothing neutrals; while ‘Ziggy’ is a border design (with a straight or corner version) that could be configured with other tiles to make a rug-like pattern on the floor. They can also be used outside for that sun-soaked patio aesthetic.
