Colourful, richly layered and irresistibly joyful, the work of Parisian interior architect Laura Gonzalez could have been made for the term ‘dopamine decorating’. Now, she’s teamed up with US decorating house Schumacher to create a debut collection of fabrics and wallpapers that will not disappoint fans of her style.
Gonzalez has turned a well-travelled eye to the collection, with India a key cultural influence. What also holds the collections together is its sense of movement – from wavy lines to curling leaves and irregular stripes, every pattern seems to jump vividly off the fabric.
For ‘Roman Reverie’ (below left), Gonzalez took as a starting point a scarf that her mother had brought back from India, while ‘Bombay Rainbow’ (below right) is a small-scale print on linen that is also based upon a traditional Indian print. ‘Jaipur Fantasie’, meanwhile (below centre, with the designer) is the richest of them all – a woven floral with scrolling leaves and a quilted effect.

Gonzalez joins a roster of esteemed designers who have collaborated with Schumacher, including Veere Grenney, Rita Konig, Timothy Corrigan and Mark D Sikes. They bring unique perspectives – but at the same time, everything is viewed through Schumacher’s lens, shot through with freshness, joy and endless possibility.
For Gonzalez, the fabric collection tops her existing collections of furniture and objects as well as an incredible roster of interior design projects, including Printemps in New York, several Cartier boutiques and chic hotels such as Casa Monti in Rome and Hotel Hana in Paris. It’s an amazing output, and when once asked how she does it by the Design Centre’s Journal, the answer was simple: “I talk fast and don’t sleep much.”
