Design Centre Stories

Meet the Showroom: Tom Raffield

Tom Raffield’s steam-bent timber creations are immediately recognisable, and this success story in contemporary British craftsmanship has taken a natural next step by opening its first showroom at the Design Centre. The Cornwall-based designer has created a visual language of his own, with sinuous outlines and light, slim forms across lighting, furniture and accessories. Here, Raffield explains how the brand seamlessly melds nature and design, and how “there is steam-bent science behind our magic.”

What brought Tom Raffield to Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour?

It’s such a great hub of creativity and innovation, which resonates perfectly with our ethos. It felt like a natural fit for us to showcase our unique, handcrafted designs in an environment that celebrates both craftsmanship and timeless design. We wanted to create a space where customers can fully immerse themselves in our world of sustainable, steam-bent wood.

What should we expect from the showroom?

Our showroom provides a tactile experience and an in-depth look at the sustainably sourced materials we work with: each curvaceous design is thoughtfully placed to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that puts artistry at the forefront. It mirrors the time and care we take to craft every design.

Why should people visit in person as opposed to looking/buying online?

Nothing quite compares to seeing our pieces in person. The nature of our designs – the warmth of the wood, the curves, and how the light interacts with each piece – can truly be appreciated up close in our showroom. Visiting our showroom nurtures more of a personal connection, allowing you to get a feel for the scale and presence of each piece in a physical space.

What’s your design philosophy?

Our philosophy is rooted in nature, sustainability and craftsmanship. We believe in hand crafting designs that are not only visually stunning but also sustainable and built to last. By using traditional steam-bending techniques combined with innovative design processes, we create iconic pieces that are both functional and timeless, with a strong connection to the natural world.

Is there a ‘hero’ product that encapsulates your brand, or that’s been a long-standing bestseller?

Our ‘Skipper’ pendant embodies everything we stand for: innovative steam-bent design, the beauty of natural wood and a sculptural aesthetic. Its success lies in its simplicity and elegance: its form is striking yet timeless, and it works beautifully in a variety of interior settings and styles. ‘Skipper’ offers a perfect balance of art and functionality, making it one of our most iconic designs.

What can we expect from the latest collections?

Our latest collections continue to explore the dynamic relationship between nature and design, transforming this into lighting pieces that enhance homes and daily routines. We understand that homes require thoughtful lighting that supports varying tasks, which is why our recent collections have focused on versatility: with adjustable designs and rechargeable, wireless lighting additions, we wanted to ensure no space has to compromise on design impact.

What craftsmanship or innovation goes into your products?

There is steam-bent science behind our magic. Each piece we create is handcrafted in our Cornish workshop, where we combine traditional steam-bending techniques with modern methods. We hand form sustainably sourced wood into our iconic curving forms, allowing the natural grain to guide each piece’s journey. It’s a highly skilled process that requires patience, precision, and creativity. Every design tells a story of craftsmanship and respect for nature.

Is there anything else you’d like the Design Centre’s community know about your brand?

We’re deeply committed to sustainability, not just in our materials but in the way we approach design as a whole. From ensuring that every product is built to last, to continuously finding ways to reduce our environmental impact, it’s at the heart of everything we do. We’d love for people to come and experience that commitment in person at our showroom. Whether you’re looking for a statement piece or simply want to explore innovative design, our team are here to inspire.
