Inspired by American folk art, Lewis & Wood’s Patchwork collection stitches textile heritage into beautifully crafted contemporary fabrics and wallcoverings
Bath’s American Museum & Garden is a treasure trove of art and design from across the pond, including an acclaimed collection of more than 250 quilts. Powerful storytellers, these objects are an intricate reminder of everyday lives in 19th-century America, and a supreme example of intricate needlework. Inspired by this folk-art time capsule, Lewis & Wood has created Patchwork, which draws on some of the museum’s most special pieces for four new fabrics.

For ‘Baltimore’, traditional quilt blocks – the square fragments that were sewn together to create a larger quilt – are transformed into a continuous full-scale print, with a separate, complementary fabric border. ‘Farm Friends’ is a cheerful menagerie of animals and birds arranged in a grid; ‘Hawaiian’ is taken from a bold quilt made in 19th-century Hawaii, with a stylised carnation motif; and ‘Libertyville’, with its decorative border, was inspired by a richly appliquéd original.
By printing on textured matelassé cloth, the fabrics preserve some of the quilted look of the originals.
All four of these new designs also come as fixed-size panel that more closely mimic the original quilts, with a hem allowance for final finishing by the customer. There are wallcoverings, too: ‘Baltimore’ and ‘Farm Friends’ join ‘Folklore’, which is similarly inspired by the museum’s collection – this time, a 19th-century stencil pattern.

At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Lewis & Wood found the perfect setting for this charming new collection, collaborating with Plankbridge on the interiors of one of its shepherd’s huts. Inside, a diminutive bedroom featured ‘Libertyville’ used for the bedlinen.
