Belgian interior architect Gert Voorjans is known for colour-drenched spaces that draw inspiration from around the world, hopping from Persia to China to Europe for his projects, which include a lakeside Shangri-La hotel in Hangzhou and a Parisian boutique for fellow Belgian Dries Van Noten.
His east-meets-west style also makes him the perfect candidate to collaborate with Jim Thompson, best known for its Thai silks and the world’s largest producer of hand‑woven fabrics. A first collection arrived in 2018, and now, the latest Flair collection of fabrics and wallcoverings builds on that: inspired by the vibrancy of the Silk Road, it features bold palettes and whimsical patterns, where every thread tells a story.

The heritage ikats of south-east Asia are represented by ‘Zig Zag’, an eye-catching silk (above, bottom left) while ‘Orient’ is an interpretation of a traditional Persian rug in a linen mix. ‘Constantinople’ (above, bottom right) is inspired by Islamic tile art; and finally, we land in Venice with ‘Bronzino’, (above bottom centre) a typical damask named after the Renaissance painter, famous for depicting the Medici family and their opulent dress.
In line with Voorjans’ vibrant aesthetic, the palettes can be avant-garde and surprising: ‘Prima Vera’ comes in a colourway of hot pink and zingy lime green on a dark chocolate background (above, top right), while ‘Zig Zag’ takes its cues from gemstone colours including ruby, sapphire and emerald.
