Tatiana de Nicolay’s Award-winning Collection for Jaipur Rugs
The EDIDA Awards are voted on by the 25 editors-in-chief of the ELLE Decoration international network, from Italy to Poland to Vietnam. This year the winners included Jaipur Rugs’ Jardins du Monde rugs, a collaboration with designer and illustrator Tatiana de Nicolay. Her seven botanical designs were inspired by the gardens of the Albert Kahn Museum in Paris, a sanctuary in the city designed in the early 20th century as a series of ‘stage sets’ by the French banker and philanthropist.
“Each rug tells a story of cultural discovery and natural beauty, inviting homeowners to experience these unique landscapes,” says de Nicolay, who started her career as an embroiderer for French fashion houses, and whose illustration work has a delicate signature style that is carried through to her pieces for the floor. ‘The Garden Gate’ (above left) sets the scene, with its trellis-like border woven through with bamboo leaves, while ‘The Flower Meadow’ (above centre, with de Nicolay) is an ode to a loose English garden, bordered by a wavy scalloped edge. ‘A River of Roses’ (above right), meanwhile, features a trellis of thorny rose branches.
De Nicolay’s vision has been faithfully brought to life by Jaipur Rugs, with incredible skill (you can even see on its website how many days each rug takes to make on the loom). Jaipur Rugs sits at the helm of India’s largest network of artisans, overseeing 40,000 craftspeople working across 7,000 looms.
