Raw Beauty

Rochas Abobora rug by JacarandaJacaranda and KLC School of Design’s rock-solid rug competition

Jacaranda Carpets & Rugs’ Minho collection is inspired by the rugged Portuguese coastline, where the Atlantic ocean has sculpted the cliffs into wondrous natural rock formations. Jacaranda found its designer, Bobbi Fitzpatrick – who was inspired by a hike in Lagos, Portugal – via a competition held in collaboration with the prestigious KLC School of Design and West Dean. Students were given the opportunity to design a hand-tufted rug, with the aim of giving up-and-coming designers exposure within the industry, while giving them an opportunity to learn about the incredible art of hand-tufting

“Bobbi’s designs seamlessly blend nature’s raw beauty with contemporary artistry, creating something truly unique,” says Richard Meager, Jacaranda’s founder and joint managing director. The collection consists of three designs, ‘Rochas’ (pictured), ‘Evoluir’ and ‘Terra’; all come in a palette of rich earthy browns, and are made from wool and Tencel, showcasing contrasting textures, artisan carving and varying pile heights. ‘Rochas’ is particularly bold, with its irregular shape and cut-out section, almost as if the rug itself is eroded.

The competition has been such as success that it’s been repeated for 2025 – so stay tuned for more next-generation names in design when the next winner is announced.
