The art of rope marquetry inspires a collection of Elitis wallcoverings
Véronique de Soultrait has found a very special niche as an artist, with a technique she calls “rope marquetry”. She creates incredible compositions for the wall – usually filled with complex geometry, but sometimes more freeform or pictorial – using rope as a raw material. Her bespoke pieces are in great demand from interior designers, but a new collaboration with Elitis should bring her name to an ever wider audience.
The Cordes Sensibiles collection uses de Soultrait’s artwork as a starting point for embossed vinyl wallcoverings whose relief surfaces are an incredibly realistic homage to the original rope pieces. Designs in a neutral palette retain the natural appearance of undyed rope, but there are joyful takes on colour here, too, like ‘Courbes’ (above left), which is available in a zingy citrus yellow, or the square grid of ‘Sillage’ (above right) which comes in a soft sea green. Boldly scaled panoramic murals, with a hand-painted feel and de Soultrait’s signature palette (such as ‘Arabesque’, above centre), complete the collection.
