The Shape of Simplicity
Articolo Studios’ Cubo and Swivel Lights Demonstrate a Decade of Ingenuity
Australian brand Articolo Studios, available from the Specified, is marking its tenth year, launching two new families of lighting that demonstrate the design and technical skill it has accrued over the past decade. True to the brand’s ethos, both are based around a simple idea, beautifully executed.
Cubo (above left) features a solid glass shade (made by pouring molten glass into a hand-chiselled wooden mould), fitted snugly into a metal cube. Available in a brass or bronze finish, and with the block of glass in clear, guava (pink) or mint (green), it comes in a series of configurations, including simple wall lights in single or double versions, and a single or multi-drop pendant. Cubo‘s success lies in the pleasing contrast between the uneven moulded glass blocks and their delicate transparency; and the smooth, strongly geometric metal.
‘Swivel’ (above right) meanwhile, is the brand’s first adjustable task light. Its clever design means that column-shaped components can be joined together to create longer configurations. As the name suggests, each wall and pendant light swivels to reveal as much or as little of the light source as needed, with the hidden part of the light shaded by an inlay in either leather, linen or brass mesh.
