Month: June 2020
Style With Substance
Turnstyle Designs' work fuses quality that's second to none – everything is hand-made, hand-stitched and hand-hammered in the Devon countryside – with an original design sense. Its new showroom displays this innovative, imaginative take on hardware.
Only the Essentials
Arteriors has curated a collection called Essential Lighting. Like the interiors equivalent of fashion's little black dress, the intention is to pinpoint the products from its extensive catalogue that possess a combination of versatility and timelessness.
An Understated Accent
De Le Cuona has launched a range of accessories, creating ready-made products from its sought-after fabrics as well as introducing vases and bowls, occasional furniture, oversized decorative beads and Belgian linen towels.
The Balearic island of Ibiza provides the design inspiration for Harlequin's Mirador collection, which reflects the White Isle's layered cultural history as well as its natural beauty.
Design the Rainbow
The Design Avenue has been transformed into a blaze of colour – and a message of thank you – with a rainbow-themed installation that celebrates the moment when the sun breaks through the clouds.
Revived & Restored
Porta Romana has launched The Upcycling Club, a refurbishment service that allows people to have their existing lighting restored to its original condition, or part-exchange old products for new.
Chunky shapes and curvy outlines have replaced hard angles in upholstered furniture. These soft silhouettes express our deep need for comfort right now: a chair that literally wraps around the sitter has a calming, cocooning effect.
Set among 500 acres of Cotswolds farmland, Anthology Farm is the escape to the country that many locked-down city-dwellers are yearning for. These two listed barns were recently transformed by interior design studio Run for the Hills into a nine-bedroom holiday let with a laid-back feel.
Ethimo has added two products to its popular Knit collection, designed by Patrick Norguet and named after its distinctive woven-rope features. The amply proportioned sofa and lounge chair introduce an upholstered element, in two new fabrics, 'Chess' and 'Red Diamonds.'
Handmade with Pride
Each roll of Jacaranda's handmade carpet passes through at least 130 skilled hands, across 208 hours, over approximately 26 days. Co-owners Lucy and Richard Meager created a photo series that shows the painstaking journey of a 'Santushi' rug in India.
Davidson London has reopened in a different location at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, with a host of new products to discover, including the Wanderlust collection of tables, which has modular options for the top, base, colour and finish.
Talk of the Table
Playful tableware and ceramics have been added to the menu at the Simpsons showroom thanks to a partnership with Micucci Interiors, including heritage Portuguese brand Vista Alegre and up-and-coming Spanish design studio MiCuit Ilustracion.
Ailanto Design has launched a collection of children's wallcoverings, available at George Spencer Designs. The brand is a window on the world of co-founder Amanda Ferragamo, whose illustrations are the starting point for every product, including these three imaginative new creations, which feature darting squirrels, scattering monkeys and bouncing bunnies.
Survive & Thrive
Working from home is going to continue to be far more integrated into everyday culture than we ever could have imagined, and this means learning to adapt in the face of an ever-changing landscape. Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour has spoken to leading international designers to discover how they are continuing to be productive in the home offices they have curated.
Inspired by a stroll through a Moroccan bazaar, 'Massura' is the winning entry in a competition by Vero Fabrics and Holland & Sherry to discover a new fabric design.
Open by Appointment
As restrictions ease, many showrooms are now operating on an appointment-only basis. The picture is changing all the time, but here are the showrooms that have stated they will be open by appointment for the week commencing 1 June.
Nicky Dobree is best known as the influential interior designer who gave the luxury ski chalet market a much-needed pivot away from a rather dated design rut. Although she has also worked on many prestigious private homes she had never worked on a commercial project before – until Plaza 18, a boutique hotel in Andalucia, came along.
The Big Blue
One of those highly adaptable colours that seems to have a place in every scheme, indigo can feel raw and industrial, like a riveted pair of classic jeans, or have a breezy informality, like a tablecloth draped over a table set for an al fresco lunch in the Med.
