Design Centre Stories

Colour Splash

Interior designer Anna Standish has teamed up with Design Centre showroom Robert Langford to inject some colour into its furniture collections. The aptly named Color collection consists of a desk/vanity, a left- and right-handed bedside table and a chest of drawers, all available in a palette of 10 shades, from the dusky pink boudoir to light silvery blue and punchy radicchio red.

Standish says she has known Robert Langford’s founder Robert Knapp “since he first started out. When he asked me what I would do [to expand the collection] I suggested he did something more fun and joyous. The brief was to design pieces that people can put into projects again and again, but that didn’t always look the same.” As an interior designer herself, Standish knew where the gaps were for well-priced furniture, and a bedside table was one of them: her simple design has elegantly tapering legs, with a generous shelf and a small drawer for trinkets.

The palette also draws on her expertise, with colours that she uses regularly in her own schemes, inspired by heritage paint colours. Painter Bridget Riley was another influence: “I love how she selects colours.”

The cast brass tassel handle that is common to all three pieces started life as a vintage find. “It was an escutcheon that I bought at a flea market and it sat on my desk for a while as I admired it,” says Standish. “So I decided to get it cast as a handle. I felt that the handle needed something to balance all the straight lines of the furniture, and I love the fact that it’s a tassel, something you would expect to be soft and floppy. It just adds something playful.”

See the collection in the Robert Langford showroom, and also look out for Standish’s showcase in the Design Avenue from the beginning of May 2024, which will display select pieces of her own-label furniture.
